Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde on Wednesday lashed out at politicians who questioned the relevance of the Lokayukta.
“BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leaders are campaigning against the Lokayukta to weaken the impact of the illegal mining report,” Hedge told mediapersons in Bangalore.
Hegde has been under fire from the BJP and JD-S after former Lokayukta SP Madhukar Shetty recently alleged that corruption was rampant in Lokayukta itself.
Following the allegation, state BJP president KS Eshwarappa called for winding up the institution.
Hegde did not deny there was some corruption in the Lokayukta institution, but held that said this has not affected investigations against the corrupt or adversely affected Lokayukta’s functioning and efficiency.
“I have myself named five Lokayukta officials in the report on illegal mining, which was submitted to the government. The persons who have no faith in democracy will only make such statements like closure of Lokayukta,” he said.
Hegde also said if allegations of corruption against an institution were to be the basis for closing it down, then legislatures, Parliament and judiciary should also be closed down.
