CAN ANYONE help this Class 7 girl to get rid of her pain in the stomach?

Shubhanshi Mishra has it for past 10 years and over two-dozen doctors have failed to find the cause and cure.

Presently under Dr VK Shukla at the new private ward number 3, Shubhanshi’s tale is a mystery that doctors even from pioneer institutes, like Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and King George’s Medical University, could not solve.

The problem started when she was just one year old. “Initially, we kept her on painkillers prescribed by the doctors but the problem persisted with increase in the intensity of pain,” says her mother Neelam.

From consulting private clinics to experts at research centres and medical institutes, they have tried their best to get the cause of pain diagnosed, but in vain. Doctors from paediatric, gastroenterology, paediatric surgery, cardio vascular thoracic surgery and psychiatry departments examined her one after the other. Some say it is congenital problem in the food pipe, while others suggest it is a psychiatric problem, says girl’s father RC Mishra. But every pathological or psychological test that was conducted on Shubhangi only suggested she was as normal as any other child of her age group. Shubhangi has gradually learned to live with the pain. She goes to school even if her stomach pains. But now she has developed another problem— her face swells and mouth gets dark patches every alternate day..

This has forced the girl into a depressive seclusion. She now avoids company and prefers to stay alone.

“We can’t understand the problem nor can the doctors. It is just the faith on God who may now send someone to help her get rid of the pain,” Mishra says.

Tests still continue on Shubhangi and on Friday the ultrasound report also showed her to be normal. Then, what makes her cry in pain remains a mystery.
