A 78-year-old Malaysian great-grandfather said "sweet words and a gentle voice" were the key to his wooing and marrying 30 women since the age of 20, a news report said on Friday.

Mohamad Zin Hazzan from the northern state of Terengganu said he never used force or intimidation to wed any of the 23 widows and seven girls who became his wives but admitted divorce had upped the number.

"I have never cast a spell to woo the ladies, but I only use sweet words and a gentle voice and approach their families before I wed them," he told the Malay-language Berita Harian daily.

"Every widow or young lady that wishes to marry me, does so willingly," he insisted.

Mohamad - who has 16 children, 70 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and now lives with his 30th wife - said it was his principle to never have more than three wives at any one time.

"When I am interested in another woman and have intentions to marry her, I will empty one space" by divorcing an existing wife, he said.

The shortest marriage he had lasted one day, while the longest union was of 20 years, before it ended in divorce.

The elderly Romeo, who admitted to not being able to remember the names of all his wives and children, said he would not hesitate to wed again if he found the right girl.

"Even though I'm not as healthy as before, I am still capable of remarrying," he said.

Malaysian Muslim men are allowed to marry up to four wives at any one time.
