The language of our rich cultural past, Hindi is also the language of our present and future. In today’s context, it is a language of the media and market and, hence, it has grown in value and stature.

The Hindi (Hons) course offered by DU combines the elements of traditional literature in the curriculum such as the history of Hindi literature and poetics, introducing students to the rich and myriad world of poets such as Kabir, Tulsi, Soordas, Bihari Thakur, Maithilisharan Gupt, Dinkar, Jaishankar Prasad, Ajneya,Muktibodh and prose of Premchand, Mohan Rakesh, Jainendra Kumar, Yashpal…, the list is endless.

There is also a paper comprising of translations of literature written in other Indian languages such as Bengali, Urdu, Assamese, Gujarati etc., which makes this course very interesting and contemporary.

A lot of effort is now being made to bring out the inter-disciplinary context of the course, where history, sociology, psychology and politics become important points of discussion in the literary context.

Hindi has broken its traditional image and has become a much sought after course now. On one hand, a student can
pursue higher studies and research in this subject and opt for teaching as a profession (both at college and school level). On the other, with the media boom and advent of many news and entertainment channels, Hindi has assumed significance as it has become the language of the masses.

There is a great demand for Hindi editors, copywriters, sub-editors, proofreaders, reporters and journalists in print as well as electronic media.
