A man accused of raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl in southern Assam’s Silchar town has turned out to be an HIV patient. According to an officer of Silchar police station, the girl’s family had lodged a complaint after she went missing on January 20. She was later in the day found lying unconscious outside Badarpur railway station, 18 km away.
After regaining consciousness at the Silchar Medical College Hospital, the girl told the police five men waylaid her as she made for the toilet outside her house at 4am. She fainted after one of the assailants sprayed some sedative on her face but not before she recognised one of them.
“Medical tests revealed the girl was raped. On the basis of her statement, we caught an accused the following day ... The others, yet to be identified, are absconding,” the officer said.
