The BJP on Tuesday appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir on time, saying the situation was conducive for the process.
Reacting to reports that the ECI may defer assembly polls at the behest of some parties, BJP state unit president Ashok Khajuria asked the Commission "not to succumb to the pressure being exerted by such parties."
"Elections should be held on time," he told reporters in Jammu . He was reacting to reports that National Conference (NC), Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress were preferring late elections, considering the recent months-long agitations over the Amarnath land row.
"The situation in the state is conducive for undertaking the electoral exercise. The BJP is opposed to the continuance of Governor's rule as it is not a substitute to a popular government," he added.
