A holistic approach should be adopted to draw up a comprehensive and time-bound master plan for restoration of the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said.

“We cannot work in a piecemeal fashion nor can we make the project open ended,” Abdullah said while chairing a meeting of the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society’s (MMJHS) governing body in Jammu on Thursday evening.

He said the restoration should be done without fiddling with the historic architectural design and facade of the complex and priority should be given to protection of vulnerable buildings.

The chief minister asked the governing body to obtain the view point of elders and keep in mind the sentiments of the people while formulating the reuse plan of the heritage centre.

He said except for the department of information, which is housed in a building outside the complex, other government departments housed within the centre should be vacated by March 31, 2009.

“The information department will be shifted when construction of the outer facade is taken up in the second phase,” he said.
