Hollywood calling for desi designers!
Mumbai designers are all set to show their clothes at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, Los Angeles.india Updated: Dec 16, 2006 19:30 IST
As Indian fashion travels abroad for its third season running, Mumbai designers Narendra Kumar, Nandita Mahtani and Surily Goel are preparing to show their clothes at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, Los Angeles, from March 18 to 22. Which cuts it a little too close to Lakme Fashion Week (March 27 to 31), but hey, anything for a Hollywood audience.
The three designers, who will show their Autumn Winter 2008 collections, are pretty much guaranteed a Hollywood presence in the front row.
Last season, Goel couldn’t show at the LA Fashion Week because Manish Malhotra and Priyadarshani Rao bowed out of the three-designer showcase.
Kumar said he too is waiting to see who gets the coveted births at the Paris prêt-a-porter event in February, because of which two French labels, Leonard Paris and Nathalia Garcon, had shown at the Lakme Fashion Week.
“It’ll be wonderful to hit Hollywood – it’s an international market that will be much more accepting of our designs.
We’ll take a trans-seasonal collection – the good thing is that LA is a market very much like Mumbai,” said Kumar, who will showcase only his women’s wear collection.
The dates also mean most of these designers will show their desi fashion week collections on international runways before showing in Mumbai.
“The collection I’ll take will pretty much be the same as Mumbai’s, but with minor differences,” said Mahtani.
Ahmedabad-based duo Rahul Mishra Samar Firdos and Kolkata-based team Dev R Nil will show at the Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in Sydney from April 30 to May 4.
“We’ll take a trans-seasonal collec tion as well – kind of Western glam that you can wear from late summer to early winter,” Nil said.
“But while it will be Autumn Winter in India, we’ll need to show Spring Summer in Sydney.” Savio Jon, Anshu Arora Sen and Rocky S meanwhile are still on schedule for the Singapore Fashion Festival in March 2007, though it’s not clear if Rocky S would still be on for the slot.
