The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday conducted searches at residence and office premises of Hasan Ali Khan’s chartered accountant Sunil Shinde in Pune.
The ED also carried out raids at the Delhi residence of Amlendu Pandey, a politician from Delhi and recovered four dairies, one of them mentioning Khan’s details, papers with code words and three Global positioning System (GPS) sets. The agency, which is under pressure to complete probe and submit status report in the Supreme Court on March 28, raided Shinde’s premises while he was in Mumbai.
Shinde was in Mumbai to appear before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in a case pertaining to Khan’s appeal against tax demands (made by the income-tax department).
The ED officials also searched Shinde’s office in Hadapsar. The ED officials seized hard disk and documents related to Khan’s I-T returns and bank accounts. Shinde has been filing Khan’s tax returns since 2007. “ED officials found nothing,” said Shinde.
According to ED source, Pandey helped Khan to procure a duplicate passport from Patna during 1997. Khan’s original passport issued by Hyderabad office but was confiscated by authorities. Using the duplicate passport, Khan along with Pandey flew to Singapore and opened bank account to deposit $75 million at Singapore Banking Corporation, which was later merged with the UBS.
ED sources said the UBS, which has its office in Mumbai, is not cooperating with the investigating authorities. The agency is in the process of writing to the Union finance ministry to intervene in this matter.
