In a case of suspected honour killing, an 18-year-old youth was thrashed and burnt alive for having an affair with a girl at Kunawla Kala village under Sahjanwa police station in Gorakhpur on Monday night. His killers draped him in a blanket, tied him to a cot and then set him afire, villagers said.
The incident took place when Nagendar, son of Ram Lavat, reached Kunawla Kala to meet the girl. Police have registered a case against eight members of the girl’s family on a complaint by Nagendar’s sister Babita. The charred body has been sent for an autopsy.
“Eight people have been booked and efforts are on to nab the suspects,” said Yadvendra Pal, station house officer of Sahjanwa.
Nagendar was a resident of Sant Kabir Nagar district nearby. He used to visit Kunawla village where his elder sister lived. During his frequent trips, he met the girl and the two fell in love, police said. They wanted to get married but faced stiff opposition from their respective families.
Nagendar visited his sister on Monday and went to meet the girl at night. He took a meal at the girl’s house and opted to rest there. Around 11pm, neighbours heard loud screams and saw flames at the residence of Lal Shah, the girl’s father. On rushing to the house, they saw the youth tied to the cot and in flames.
Nagendar was rushed to the Sahjanwa community health centre from where he was sent to the Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur owing to his critical condition. He died at the medical college after few hours of treatment.
