To prevent honour killings and counter threats to couples who choose to marry outside their caste or religion in the face of social opposition, director general of police Devraj Nagar has instructed police to provide them security.

The DGP’s order (no. 45/253) sent to all SSPs of the state on Tuesday reads, “If a boy or girl gets opt for inter-caste or inter-religion marriage, the police should provide them security cover. The adult boys and girls have been given freedom to marry by their choice and so police should take stern action against any harassment immediately.”

The order further states that in case of any honour killing, police should register a case, begin investigations, which should be totally impartial, and arrested the accused immediately. The final report should be filed only after the satisfaction of an officer of SP rank.

In a recent incident in Aligarh that stoked tension in Talsera village, the Jats boycotted Muslims after a girl from their community married a Muslim boy. A panchayat was also held in the village against the marriage.

In another case, Sushila Chauhan, 22, of Uttasani village in Gangri block, who recently married a Pandit boy, also faced threats and harassment. She said, “I had to take an order from the high court to affirm the validity of my marriage, as both our families were against it on caste grounds. The DGP’s order would be a gift to couples like us. It would help stop honour killings, but the police should implement the directives properly.”

Moreover, the district has witnessed about a dozen honour killings over the last three years.

Deputy inspector general (Aligarh range) Prakash D said, “The DGP’s orders will be implemented fully. If the girl and boy are both adults and wish to live together, the police will certainly provide them security cover. At present too, police provides security to couples who legally married.”

Now after the orders of DGP, the couples will be provided police security and also legal aid, so that honour killings may be stopped.
