House of wisdom

This has reference to Arvind Kala?s article A house full of elders (November 3).

This has reference to Arvind Kala’s article A house full of elders (November 3).  Manmohan Singh is the PM not because of his age but his unquestionable competence. So was it with AB Vajpayee and PV Narasimha Rao. I see our house full of wide people and not full of elders.

Poor judgment

Apropos of the report Jethmalani to fight Manu’s case (November 2), the renowned lawyer is not only an icon in the field of justice but is also a highly esteemed figure in public life. A person of his stature should not fall so low for the sake of money and fame.

Psychological problems

Reports of sporadic instances of jawans shooting their colleagues are bizarre. There are instances of recruitment of personnel who are not psychologically and emotionally fit for the rigours of army life. There is a need to upgrade the recruitment process by subjecting the applicants to aptitude tests, in addition to physical tests.

Also, the importance of suitable leadership at various levels of command, which needs to change with changing aspirations, cannot be overestimated.

Wrong agenda

The editorial Capital punishment (November 2), was hopelessly out of sync with the mood in Delhi, and makes readers suspect why this agenda is being pushed.

The problem occurred due to the corrupt civic officials who gave permission for business establishments to operate in residential areas. The politicians approved, and encouraged realtors to jack up property prices. The court’s verdict is laudable and deserves citizens’ support. However, instead of using an iron hand, the authorities would do well to adopt a calibrated policy that factors in the human angle.
