Since Basant was in touch with his co-villager and friend Ombir Singh, the Sonepat police took his help to arrest the killer of a Chandigarh cop.
Sonepat SP Arun Nehra said that when Basant called up Delhi police constable Ombir from Ambala, his friend advised him (Basant) to surrender. "Ombir told him 'galtiyon ka koi ant nahi hota. Tu kahin bhi surrender kar de (There is no end to mistakes. You surrender anywhere)'," Nehra said.
Since Basant had run out of money, he asked Ombir to arrange for some. He had told him that he would be reaching New Delhi railway station on Saturday evening.
Sobha Singh, the manager of Sirswal View Hotel in Paharganj, Delhi, told HT that Basant, Sarita and Ombir had checked into the hotel on Saturday night. "Room numbers 303 and 305 were booked for them. Ombir had made the booking," Singh said.
The hotel is a five-minute walk from New Delhi railway station. "After settling down in the hotel room, Ombir went out to get money from a nearby ATM. Within five minutes, a Haryana police team was knocking at room number 305 where Basant and Sarita were staying. It was Ombir who probably signalled the police," the manager said.
