HOW CAN Ash, Dia, Celina, Bipasha help you surf the frontiers of knowledge? Read on to find out.
Today, I plan to focus on sites on which you can share presentations, which are an easy way to express and absorb knowledge — authorSTREAM (www.authorstream.com) and SlideShare (www.slideshare.net) — are both, in fact, Indian companies. AuthorSTREAM is based in Mohali, Chandigarh. While Slideshare is technically SanFrancisco-headquartered, its main engineering happens out of Okhla in Delhi. Both these companies are doing to presentations what YouTube did to videos.
The power of the presentation is still underestimated. While everybody knows that the PowerPoint, like the BlackBerry, is a stylish corporate tool, the simple fact is that for nearly any topic on the earth, seeing a slide show is a cool way to improve your knowledge.
On SlideShare, you can also upload professional videos and PDF documents and also track who is viewing your stuff. Another site which is popular for sharing PDF documents is Scribd (www.scribd.com) which also now offers uploading facilities for Microsoft Word documents and presentations.
SlideShare is the world’s largest community for sharing presentations, with 55 million monthly visitors and 120 million pageviews. It also says it is among the most visited 200 sites in the world. Slideshare also enables you to upload OpenOffice and Keynote presentations. AuthorSTREAM focuses on PowerPoint presentations. On the site, you can broadcast your presentations, convert them into videos and also retain voice narrations and also collaborate at work using it.
These sites, whose basic features are free, also offer widgets (software code) that can be embedded on blogs and websites, and of course, share them on social sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.
As it turns out SlideShare has named its servers (host computers) after hot Bollywood actresses: Ash, Dia, Celina, Bipasha are where it stores the fanciest presentations.
