How Delhi spoils its dogs

While Paris Hilton may be getting a mansion built for her babies (read dogs), Delhiites are not far behind when it comes to pampering their pooches. Louis Vuitton and Burberry outfits, designer track-suits during winters, silver chains and spa sessions —these are just some of the luxuries that some of Delhi’s most pampered four-legged friends are only too used to.
Designer Hemant Sagar has a 6 X 6 feet portrait of his Jack Russell terrior Leon, clicked by a celeb photographer. His other dog Devi wears Swiss collars and both pets have an annual maintenance contract that entitles them to weekly baths, grooming and massage sessions. France-born Leon travelled business class with his master to countries like France, Germany and Italy. “I am extremely attached to my babies. Since sweets are bad for health, I only give them snacks of chicken and liver,” says Hemant.
Interior designer Sita Nanda has two Pekingese dogs who are like her “own children”. The dogs have their own cupboard that stores (hold your breath) designer labels like Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. “In winter, they lie on the floor. To ensure that they do not catch a cold, I make them wear track pants” she says.
Designer Nalini Malhotra’s eight little ‘babies’ love bling. Each of them has a silver chain, ties, scarves, and a special ‘winter jacket collection’ replete with fancy Chanel and Louis Vuitton. Each week, they get a body massage and grooming session at Scooby Scrub pet grooming parlour.
But the nawab of the lot has to be 11-month-old Labrador Kaiser. Although his owner Manjit Chandran’s family only has a 3-bedroom flat in Dwarka, they have given Kaiser his very own air-conditioned room with a bed and heaps of toys. A personal trainer visits every day to give the pup a 3-hour workout. His special diet costs owner, Manjit Chandran a neat 1000 bucks every second day. Manjit’s son Akhil says, “My mum has pampered my dog more than us.”
