How did the Ashoka chakra replace the charkha?

The idea of including the charkha, the spinning wheel, was proposed by Lala Hansraj Sodhi to represent Gandhi’s ideal of making Indians self-reliant.Since the charkha did not appear symmetrical from both sides, it was replaced by the chakra which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka to symbolize dharma and law. The diameter of the chakra approximates to the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes.
