Less than 90 minutes after the Supreme Court turned down his final appeal, authorities at Nagpur central jail hanged 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon.
The end came at 6.35am on Thursday, the day he turned 54 years old.
But preparations for the hanging were on much before a three-judge bench of the SC pronounced its order at 4.55am
Reports said Memon was woken up at 3.30am permitted a warm bath and provided a set of fresh clothes.
Arrangements to offer namaz and read the Holy Quran were made, following which he was offered a breakfast of his choice.
After a final medical examination, officials read out to him the charges for which he was being hanged.
Memon had reportedly not eaten since Wednesday, but his health - both mental and physical - was within normal parameters.
He was hanged by the constable who executed 26/11 attacks terrorist Ajmal Kasab at Pune’s Yerawada jail in 2012.
Earlier, it was said that Yakub would be hanged at 7.00am, but it was changed at the last moment and he was executed at around 6.30am.
According to information available, additional DGP, Meeran Borwankar, the jail superintedent, Yogesh Desai, a medical officer and few others were present at the hanging yard .
The body will be handed over to his family on the condition that it will not be used for protests.
Yakub’s brother, Suleiman Memon, cousin, Usman Memon and other relatives are yet to reach the jail to claim the body.
