There are many items in the home that are worth splurging on. But on the other hand, there are some that we buy on impulse and regret the ‘extra’ expense later.

Keep in mind
The bed, the drawing room sofa set, the bathroom tub or shower stall, the kitchen faucets and countertops are all things that one does not change often.

“Leather furniture is something that one has to splurge on; you must not buy it cheap. It is a permanent feature of the house. The accessories are items which can be saved on,” says Punam Kalra, interior designer, I’m Applied Centre for Arts.

Similarly, lighting is an important feature of the house. “The CFLs, halogen lighting can be saved on but the show lighting such as chandeliers, hanging light on the side table etc, make a huge difference. While local reproductions of the same can be bought, the European products last longer and are also cleaner designs,” explains Nupur Gupta, partner, Alchemy.

Pocket friendly
“You do not have to convert your house into an art gallery by putting too many pictures on the walls. One decent painting coupled with some well-framed and nicely arranged family photographs can be a cheaper as well as better option,” says Gupta.

Keeping low on unnecessary accessorisation gives the house a non-cluttered look. “Go low on the number of vases as well as their price. You may also want to replace your curtains with the change in season. Add selectively,’ suggests Kalra.

Tips to save:

Put a budget for yourself. That will help control your expenditure.

Instead of an expensive painting, a beautiful plant can do wonders for the look of the room.

On tables, get rid of the cloth runners and use metal and jute ones instead. Though expensive, they will last longer and lend a trendy appeal.

Impactful hardware and handles catch the eye and should be splurged on. Visit an antique shop and speciality stores to scout one-of-a-kind option.

Save on towels, shower curtains, toothbrush holders and other accessories you are likely to change often.
