The human resource development ministry has refused to succumb to demands from Jammu-based groups to withdraw the nomination of international relations expert Amitabh Mattoo as Vice Chancellor of the new central university in Jammu.

But the President, who as Visitor has to approve appointments of VCs to central universities, is yet to give her consent.

The HRD ministry had first forwarded Mattoo's name for the VC's post based on the recommendations of a selection panel of experts. Several Jammu-based groups however petitioned the President, accusing Mattoo of pro-separatist leanings and questioning his credentials as an administrator.

These groups accused Mattoo of malpractices while he was VC of the state government's Jammu University. The President had forwarded these complaints to the HRD ministry.

But the HRD ministry replied stating that the selection panel of experts was best placed to comment on Mattoo's credentials and reiterated that they had not found anything objectionable in his past record.
