The Election Commission announced on Wednesday that the polls would be held in nine phases until May 12, with 814 million people set to cast their votes – 100 million more than in the last elections in 2009.

"The first date of polls shall be on 7th April," chief election commissioner VS Sampath told a press conference.

People took to Twitter and other social networking sites to express their views on the issue. Comments ranged from readers saying that more time should have been given after poll dates announcement to some saying that the move will allow the elections to be managed in a more efficient way.

A poll conducted by the Hindustan Times, sought the views of the readers. While a majority of voters said they were happy with election commission's decision, there were some who believed otherwise. Here are the results.
