2014 emerged as a year of thrills, tragedies, excitement, joy, euphoria and suspense. From the flood fury that hit Jammu and Kashmir, to Mangalyaan; from Bigg Boss 8 to the ISIS terror, here is a list of the top five special coverages HT carried.

Flood fury hits Jammu and Kashmir

Hit by torrential rainfall, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed disastrous floods and landslides across majority of its districs in September 2014. The flood claimed about 277 lives in India and 280 in Pakistan. The Jhelum and Chenab rivers crossed the danger marks by several feet.

The floods caused tremendous loss of land and property. Rescue operations were carried out relentlessly by the National Disaster Response Force, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army. When the floods wreaked havoc in Kashmir and plunged most parts of the Valley into darkness, few doctors at a lone maternity care hospital in Srinagar, lent a ray of light to people's lives by performing birth surgeries under candlelight.

According to Central data, security forces and other central agencies moved about 12.5 lakh litre of drinking water to various places. They also installed around 2,000 tents and provided 80,000 blankets to affected people. Several relief camps were organised across India which collected and delivered medicines, clothes, and bare necessities to the flood victims.

India's Mars Orbiter Mission- Mangalyaan

The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) or the Mangalyaan, a spacecraft orbiting Mars since September 2014, was launched on 5 November 2013 by ISRO. Mangalyaan is India’s first interplanetary mission. With MOM, India became the first nation to reach Mars orbit in its first attempt and the first Asian nation to do so.

The MOM probe lifted-off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (Sriharikota Range SHAR), on November 5, 2013.

Mangalyaan was named among the best inventions of 2014 by TIME magazine which described it as a technological feat that will allow India to flex its “interplanetary muscles.”

The Mars spacecraft cost India just $74 million, less than the budget for the multi-Acacdemy Award winning science fiction thriller film Gravity.

The mission, which took just four years from feasibility study to arrival at Mars orbit, will now study the surface of the planet to establish the presence of methane, among other tasks using the five instruments in its 15-kilogram payload.

Bigg Boss 8

Bigg Boss 8 is the eighth season of the Indian reality television show, with Salman Khan playing host for the fifth time. This time, the House featured Sonali Raut, Karishma Tanna, Upen Patel, Gautam Gulati, Diandra Soares, among others.

Bigg Boss 8 has proven to be a never-seen-before adventure which promised and delivered a thrilling ride. Uptill now, the 12 participants this year have carved their paths, forged their connections and accepted the quirks of their housemates in order to survive.

This season of Bigg Boss had a new twist of 'Special Panel', where a team of past guest houses would share their and the public's views and opinions of the current housemates before eviction. The panel would rotate every week.

My India My Vote
The nation has been in election mode since the very beginning of this year. From the resignation of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's resignation in 49 days of having been in power, to the rise of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of the nation, we saw a lot of ups and downs in the sphere of politics.

The Bharatiya Party won the Lok Sabha polls with a landslide victory with the most decisive mandate the country has ever delivered.

Iraq on the brink

The Islamic State or IS is a jihadist rebel group based in Iraq and Syria.

It emerged in Iraq in 2006, three years after the US-led invasion, spurred by global terror network al Qaeda.

The jihadists launched deadly attacks on the Shiite majority, oppressed under toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein, and American troops. Sunni tribes rose up against them.

The jihadists rallied to the rebellion in neighbouring Syria in July 2011, joining forces with local rebel groups including Al-Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda's Syria franchise, battling to topple the regime.

In January, deadly clashes erupted between the Iraqi jihadists, now known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), and Al-Nusra and other rebel groups which refused to fight under their banner and instead accused them of atrocities.

In June, ISIS declared an Islamic caliphate in territory it controls in northern Syria and Iraq, renamed itself Islamic State and ordered Muslims to obey its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

In 2014, an unknown number of Syrians, several Lebanese soldiers, two American journalists, one American and two British aid workers, have been beheaded by the IS.
