Cracking the whip on shoddy road repair work, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) administrator inspected the city on Tuesday for collection of samples by the Shriram Institute for Industrial Research, Delhi.
Huda chief Praveen Kumar has threatened contractors with cancellation of contracts if any sample sent to the laboratory fails the stringent quality tests.
Officials of the industrial research institute and the administrator visited under-construction roads and collected samples from the roads dividing Sectors 51/46 and 50/47 in new Gurgaon, in the presence of mediapersons.
The administrator had recently inspected all roads that have been re-carpeted in the city. "These samples must clear the tests. If they don't, a heavy penalty will be imposed and the concerned contractors' contract may be cancelled with immediate effect," Kumar said.
Earlier, the Delhi-based institute had collected samples from South City Road, service lanes of Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road and other areas repaired in the past six months.
"Samples collected earlier have cleared laboratory tests," said a senior Huda official.
The officials of the institute, however, denied comments on earlier tests.
"As per an agreement with the Huda, we cannot disclose the test reports to the media directly," said Dr PK Kaicker, member, governing board, Shriram Institute for Industrial Research.
The Haryana government had sanctioned about Rs. 200 crore for re-carpeting of city roads for the current financial year, including the main carriageway of MG Road, Golf Course Extension Road and Sohna Road.
Work, however, is yet to begin on these three stretches.
