'Huge turnout reflects ex CM's popularity'

india Updated: May 10, 2008 23:23 IST

Enthused by the 60 per cent turnout of voters during the first phase of polling for 89 Assembly seats in Karnataka, JD(S) on Saturday said it reflected the popularity of former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy.

"The massive turnout of voters in the rural areas shows that Kumaraswamy is very popular among the masses," JD(S) national spokesman Danish Ali told PTI.

He said of the 89 seats that went to polls on Saturday, JD(S) would bag half of them and attain absolute majority in the 224-member House after the second phase of polling.

Ali charged both Congress and BJP with trying to finish regional parties like JD(S) and said it was dangerous for multi-party system of democracy.
