Hundreds of people on Monday courted arrest in Irilbung area in Imphal demanding resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh over the killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter even as police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the crowd, official sources said.
Activists of a major social organisation, Apunba Lup, thronged Irilbung police station, about 7km from here, protesting against the July 23 killing of Chungkham Sanjit at Imphal market complex and demanded Singh’s resignation, they said, adding police had to fire about seven teargas shells to control the mob but no one was injured in the incident.
Meanwhile, a large number of students also gathered in front Raj Bhavan and hundreds of women thronged the city police station to participate in the mass court arrest but they were later dispersed by the police, sources said.
An AL spokesman said their activists would continue to court arrest today and added that a series of agitations would be launched to press for their demands which included termination of services of the commandos involved in the July 23 incident.
Public outrage broke out when a Delhi-based news magazine published photos showing that Sanjit was shot dead in a cold-blooded manner.
However, the Chief Minister is presently in Delhi to attend the CMs’ meeting on security situation and he is expected to discuss with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the developing situation in Manipur.
