Hundreds of Hindus under the banners of Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti on Thursday took out procession in the city and were arrested while they were protesting against the union government to demand immediate re-transfer of cancelled land to the Amarnath Shrine Board.
On a pre-planned programme, protestors gathered at local Company Bagh Chowk and took out procession up to district administrative complex where they offered their arrest and were immediately taken under custody and rolled out in the as many as eight buses waiting for them.
While addressing the protestors, Ravi Mahindru, District BJP Chief said that union government should not underestimate strengthen of Hindus and instead of bowing down to the political parties, which were known as sympathizers of the neighbouring country, Hindus' should be immediately given back their right in the form of re-transfer of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board.
Government just wanted to test patience of Hindus but the continued agitation in Jammu has already shown them what it wanted and if the justice was not done at the earliest, situation would be worse and union government, who has just adopted 'wait and watch policy' over the issue, would be responsible for the same.
When contacted, SK Kalia, Superintendent of Police (SP) , confirmed that over 750 persons were arrested by the district police and were taken to local Guru Gobind Singh stadium, from where they were released.
Prominent among those who were arrested include, KD Bhandari and Bhagat Chunni Lal (local MLAs), Mahant Ganga Das, President of the Samiti, Punjab, and KL Sharma, District president of the BJP Yuva Morcha.
