Hundreds of admirers and party supporters paid final homage to their demised leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet, who was cremated with state honours on Sunday.

The body of the CPM stalwart, which was kept for public viewing at the party Central Committee office through the day, was taken in a procession to the funeral accompanied by party leaders.

“Though Comrade Surjeet is not between us, we would take forward his ideals and the party would work in the same manner like when he was,” Sitaram Yechury, CPM Politburo member said.

Among those who attended the funeral are Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BSP chief Mayawati, SP leaders Amar Singh, TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, JD(S) president Deve Gowda. Union ministers like Shivraj Patil, Jaipal Reddy were also present.

In the wake of recent political developments, where the BSP went against the government in the trust vote, it was interesting to see BSP chief Mayawati chatting with Sonia Gandhi.
