The news of Satya Nadella taking over as CEO of software giant Microsoft indeed called for a celebration, particularly in his hometown Hyderabad.

“Oh! We are delighted. It’s our very own Satya!” exclaimed Faiz Khan, Nadella’s batchmate from the Hyderabad Public School. “It’s a matter of great pride for all of us.”

The 46-year-old, who is currently heading the company’s enterprise software and cloud computing divisions, would be the first non-American CEO to head Microsoft.

“I am honoured, humbled and excited,” Nadella said on his elevation to a news-channel in the US.

Some key members of the IT industry too expressed their delight on Nadella’s achievement.

“I am very happy that an Indian will head one the world’s most impactful software companies. I extend my heartiest congratulations to him and wish he is even more successful because Microsoft needs it, India needs it and the world needs it,” said NR Narayana Murthy, executive chairman, Infosys. Extending his wishes to Nadella, S (Kris) Gopalakrishnan, executive vice-chairman, Infosys said, “I am confident Microsoft will scale to new heights under him.”

“Satya was given charge of some struggling businesses in Microsoft such as the business solution businesses in 2003, which he successfully turned around,” said Rajiv Kaul, former managing director of Microsoft-India.

Microsoft seems to have a special connection with Hyderabad where it set up its first development centre outside the US in 1998.
