Rubbishing Goa Home minister Ravi Naik's statement that the state was just a transit point for drugs, a Congress legislator has said narcotics have attained menacing proportions in the coastal belt and claimed that he personally knew people involved in it.

"There may be drugs in South Goa but as far as North Goa's coastal belt is concerned, I know for sure drugs are there and I can identify the people who are doing it," Agnelo Fernandes, a three-time Congress MLA from Calangute, told a local television channel last night.

Nigerian gangs are holding control over narcotic sale in Candolim-Calangute belt...locals are involved at Anjuna beach while at Ozrant beach Israelis sell it, he said.

"The extreme North district areas like Morjim are controlled by Russian drug sellers. They don't encroach into each others' areas," Fernandes, who is also the chairman of state-owned economic development corporation, said.

The legislator's statement comes in stark contradiction to his party colleague Naik's denial on sale of narcotics within the state boundaries.

Fernandes, in the state legislative assembly had recently contended that drugs had become a major problem in Goa and is controlled by several foreigners.

"I had named one person in the assembly too but nothing happened. In areas like Candolim, a person sells drugs travelling on a motorcycle with (police) constable as a pillion rider," Fernandes alleged.
