Swing bowler Praveen Kumar is all set to open a new chapter of his cricketing career during the upcoming Sri Lanka series. The ace bowler from Uttar Pradesh on Monday spoke to
about his plans and preparation for the series. Excerpts:
Were you expecting a call-up for the Sri Lanka series?
I was not sure. I was expecting a call-up for the India-England series (in November-December), but nothing happened. Though disappointed, I never gave up hope. The call-up yesterday came as a surprise.
Do you have any fitness related issues after the minor injury you had suffered?
I suffered a minor injury during the Ranji Trophy match against Baroda. As a result, I missed two matches. But I bowled well after recovering. I am fit now. Some 18-odd wickets in seven Ranji matches this season indicate my potential.
Any special plans for Sri Lanka batsmen?
I’ve chalked out a plan but would not like to reveal it. I am going to make full use of this opportunity to cement my place in the side.
Your gains from the domestic season after doing wonders in the tri-series Down Under last year?
Domestic cricket is the best place for a player to regain confidence and attract the attention of selectors. I am satisfied with my bowling this season and will love to take wickets in Lanka. Though it is tough for swing bowlers to taste success on Indian wickets, I didn’t lose heart.
My colleagues in the UP team, especially coach Gyanendra Pandey, boosted my morale.
Do you think you will be able to break into the playing XI with Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan and Munaft Patel in the squad?
The competition is tough, but I will do my best whenever I get a chance.
Though Sri Lanka are a good batting side, I expect to repeat my Australian success.
