‘I hadn’t expected to have such a short role’
Kangna Ranaut admits that she had wanted to be a part of the Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori starrer, Kites. And had left it to the director, Anurag Basu, and the producer, Rakesh Roshan, to decide how to sell their film.india Updated: Jun 24, 2010 14:31 IST
“It was their call how much of me to use and whether to rope me in for the promotion,” she points out.
It was a surprisingly short role for an actress who has just bagged a National Award at 23 for her ‘intense’ portrayal in Fashion. Ranaut reasons that footage has never been an issue with her as long as the film and her performance has been appreciated. Still she admits that though they never spoke in terms of how many minutes of her there would be in Kites, she had no idea that her role would turn out to be quite so short.
“I have never under-estimated myself as an actress. I know that even if it is a special appearance, I am capable of giving a lot more than what you saw,” she asserts. “I have six films coming up, with A-list stars and huge budgets, and this could affect their viability and my brand. Still, I hold no grudges. I know that neither Anurag nor Mr Roshan had any intention of short-charging me. Such things happen. You just have to let go and move on. I have a substantial role in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai.”
Ask her if she will be in any of Basu’s next films and the actress says that she and her mentor-director have consciously decided to take a break from each other: “We’ve made three movies, Gangster, Life In A Metro and Kites. It’s time to work with other actors and directors.”
