‘I have not been able to act well’

... jokes Shah Rukh Khan, responding to Karan Johar’s statement that he is just like his character in My Name Is Khan

india Updated: Feb 05, 2010 01:07 IST

Filmmaker Karan Johar has a theory to explain why actor Shah Rukh Khan is perfect for the role of Rizwan Khan in his upcoming film, My Name Is Khan. In an interview with Dr Prannoy Roy, Executive Chairperson, NDTV Group, Johar says Shah Rukh suits the role perfectly because he has Asperger syndrome, just like Rizwan, only that the actor doesn’t realise it. “There could not be better casting for Rizwan Khan than Shah Rukh Khan, not because of his brilliant acting abilities, but because he suffers from Asperger and does not know it. There is that brilliance, a level of detachment and a deep level of intensity, which very few people understand. You do have this problem, Shah Rukh,” says Johar. At this point, SRK butts in and jokes, “Once again, I have not been able to act well. I was just myself.”

Hope for change

In Chak De! India and now in My Name Is Khan, SRK plays a Muslim character. Asked if he is trying to use his influence in society to kill negative stereotypes around Muslims, Shah Rukh says, “I wish I could. Cinema can make you aware of few aspects of society, life and the world in general. But, unfortunately, that cinema can’t change it... it just reflects the society.”
On a lighter note, SRK is all praise for co-star Kajol. “She is probably the only star who is not bothered about what is going to
happen to her career. She is easy to work with, and very serious about acting. She is not bothered about the trappings of stardom. We clicked immediately.”

Short and sweet

Talking about the film, Johar elaborates, “This is the shortest film I have ever directed. If that is some criteria for success, then we are on.” SRK adds, “It’s short enough leaving you wanting more and long enough to satisfy you.”

The two-part show, India Questions, will be telecast on February 6 and 7 at
10 pm on NDTV 24x7
