Irfan Pathan wants to be back in Team India. Apart from working hard on his usual role – that of a bowling all-rounder – he’s open to present himself in new avatar of a batting all-rounder if that makes the return route any easier.
Excerpts:

Not long ago, you were the key member of the national squad. How much does it hurt not be even in reckoning now?

Well, I am still alive, playing cricket for my state and franchise. That’s enough to keep me going and happy. Obviously the ultimate dream is to play for the country. And if I keep playing well and have the blessing of god, no one can stop me from getting back into the side. Once my time comes, all’s going to be well.

Do you think you could repackage yourself as batting all-rounder as your bowling has been a bit below par, but your batting has been really good?

Well, that fact that my IPL team is ready to play me purely as a batsman says it all.

Actually, I want to reach the stage where I can fit into any side purely as a batsman or a bowler. And as for fitting in as batting all-rounder, it can happen. The way I am bating I think I can pull it off as a batsman.

How do you see your bowling shaping up?

It’s a bit below par than I would want it to be at the moment. But then it’s acceptable as I am coming off an injury and didn’t have much bowling coming into the IPL. My franchise understand s that and are open to play me purely as a batsman as well.

How do you compare the captaincy of Yuvraj Singh and Kumar Sangakkara?

Yuvi had his own style and Sanga has his own. I had fun playing under Yuvi because he understands the Indian mentality better than others would. Sanga goes into the minutest details and tries his best to everyone comfortable. But at the end of the day, captain is as good as the team.

Your team isn’t having the best of times at the moment?

Things haven’t worked out as nicely as we would have wanted them to so far. But then everything is not lost yet. If we win at least six matches of the remaining nine, we could still be in with a chance of making it to the semis. We are a good bunch, just need to put a few things together.
