APJ Abdul Kalam spent the last five years in Rashtrapati Bhavan sharing his vision of making India a developed country and inspiring the youth to dream big. President Kalam carried this message through in his last address as the first citizen as well.
He borrowed a stanza from a song in the 1940 movie Pinocchio to inspire the youth. "When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires, will come true," Kalam said, adding that this was true for everyone, particularly the youth. “If they aim great, I am sure they will reach close to the target or the target," he said.
Kalam urged people to resolve to continue working to realise the mission of developed India 2020 and counted ten attributes that the nation should have. These included eradication of poverty, governance is responsive and the children in school. “A nation that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership,” the outgoing president said in his farewell address.
"I will be always with you, dear citizens, in the great mission of making India a developed nation before 2020," the 75-year old technologist who described the last five years as “beautiful and eventful”, said.
Kalam said his mission in life would be to bring connectivity between billion hearts and minds of people in the multicultural society and to embed the self-confidence that "we can do it".
