I will get Tendo to review the story of my life

After last year’s high we’ve been left to worry about other results as much as our own. We need to win our remaining two games and some of the other results also need to go in our favour. Gautam Gambhir writes.

One of the many friendships I am proud of in the KKR dressing room is the one that I have with Ryan ten Doeschate. We call him Tendo. He’s popular in the team and a banner at the Eden Gardens the other day praising his butt suggests that he is popular amongst females as well. Though I am told ‘butt’ was spelt as ‘but’!

There is a great deal more to Tendo than just that. He comes across as somebody who is at peace with himself, always with a ready smile.

He is one of those cricketers who likes travelling, trying new things. He loves to read and as his teammate I am glad to see that he is hitting the ball well. Touch wood!

Tendo’s love for books has taken him to the next level. He is now writing book reviews. I can’t think of any other active cricketer who is doing this.

You can read his reviews on http://ryantendoeschate.wordpress.com/. He says he reads a book a week and then reviews the same.

The latest he has reviewed is Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil. I don’t know if I will read the book but I enjoyed reading my colleague’s review. And I have decided that Tendo will definitely review whenever I write a book on my life story. I am sure he will agree to do that.

One of the chapters in the book will definitely talk about the T20 league and what it means to me.

Difficult situation
Even while I am writing this, the game between RCB and Kings XI Punjab is on. And every now and then there is a query on the score of this game in Bangalore. It feels wretched to be in this situation.

In the press conference before the game against RCB here at Ranchi I was asked “aap cricket field per hastey kyon nahi hain (why don’t you smile on a cricket field)?” I smiled and gave some vague reply.

It may seem an innocent question but seemed loaded too. I don’t know but I’ve always played my cricket with intensity whether it was at school, juniors or international.

Can’t smile
My idea of playing the sport has always been to win and I get distraught when things don’t go our way. That’s why that absence of a smile.

And yes, the crowd at Ranchi can put smiles on our faces as well with a bit more support.

I think a lot has been said about the wicket here but I feel it was a fine surface to play on.

It was a bit on the slower side and someone needed to bat well on it.

It would be unfair to term it poor and blame the low scores on the curator. I myself was guilty of a poor stroke in the last game.

I was set and not much was happening for the bowlers. I cut a ball that was too close to me and paid the price.

Maybe against Pune Warriors I should make up for that bad shot.
