Congress MP from Gurdaspur Partap Singh Bajwa has said he will welcome former Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal into the partyfold if he wishes to join it.
"If Manpreet wishes to join Congress, I will welcome him as it will strengthen the party in areas where Manpreet has a stronghold," Bajwa said.
48-year-old Manpreet, who is a nephew of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, was axed from the SAD-BJP government on October 13 following a row over the Centre's reported debt waiver offer to the state.
Bajwa said in case Manpreet joins Congress, the party position will be strengthened in Mansa, Moga and Faridkot as these areas do not have any strong candidate against Akalis.
Asked whether the party is so weak in these areas that it needs Manpreet's support, he said, "The party does not need the support of anyone and there are many leaders who can fight against the Akalis. But if Manpreet joins us, the party will be strengthened."
There are different opinions within the party on the issue and former chief minister Capt Amrinder Singh has already stated that he will oppose the decision.
