An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detected near a railway track in Assam's Udalguri district on Wednesday, police said.

The five-kg IED was spotted by Village Defence Personnel during routine patrolling near the track in Khoirabari Railway station. It was safely defused by the army's bomb disposal squad, they said.

The matter was reported to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the police.
Meanwhile, security in the district has been stepped up following intelligence reports that militant outfits ULFA and NDFB were planning to disrupt Independence Day celebrations.
