IIT-Delhi extension campus to come up at Sonepat

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi will set up an extension campus in Haryana's Sonepat district.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday announced that the state government would provide 50 acres of land for setting up the IIT-Delhi extension campus at the upcoming Rajiv Gandhi Education City (RGEC) campus in Sonepat near Delhi.

Rohtak MP and Hooda's son Deepender Singh Hooda, who is a member of IIT advisory council, presented a letter from the Director of IIT, Delhi, Prof. RK Shevgaonkar to the Chief Minister at a public meeting on Sunday.

In his communication, Prof. Shevgaonkar said the IIT-D extension campus in Haryana would not only facilitate the much-needed expansion of activities of IIT Delhi but also provide an impetus to the economic and technical growth of Haryana.

The Chief Minister, who addressed a public meeting after laying the foundation stones of 10 prestigious educational institutions in the RGEC campus said that Haryana would be developed as an education hub of international repute.

All these institutes will be set up over an area of 167.74 acres. The RGEC ,apart from offering regular courses in management, information and technology and computer sciences, would also house bio-medical engineering, bio-technology, nano-technology,defense research, film and media studies institutions.

Around one lakh students are likely to get quality education from institutions based in the RGEC campus. Out of the total, 25 % seats would be reserved for students from Haryana. Also, a provision of special rebate has been made for the outstanding students belonging to Haryana .
