IIT-K students thrashed by cops

OVER 150 students of the Indian Institute of Technology- Kanpur were manhandled by police at the IIT-K gate while they were trying to go to Nanarao park to participate in a discussion on social harmony on Sunday. What was worse, even the girl students of IIT-K were beaten up by men in khaki when the IITians tried to come out of the institute to participate in the discussion. It may be noted that the proposed mass hunger strike at Phoolbagh on Sunday had been dropped by the FIR members in view to the Supreme Court directive forbidding anyone to hold any protest on the issue of reservation.

In the half-an-hour when the cops went berserk, over a dozen students of IIT-K sustained injuries and were given treatment at the health centre on the IIT-K premises.

IITians, who on Saturday night had changed their programme of mass hunger strike, were coming towards the IIT gate to participate in the discussion.

Suddenly heavy contingent of police led by circle officers and several other SHOs, closed the main gate of IIT-K at 8 am. The students kept requesting the cops to let them go to Nanarao park to participate in the discussion but to no avail. When the cops ignored the students’ requests for one and half hour, impatient students let loose and got the door opened forcibly at 10 am. The cops then resorted to manhandling and even some police officials hit the students with sticks.

In the barbaric act of police, several girl students fainted on the railway crossing and the boys who tried to rescue them, were also thrashed. All this while, an administrative official deputed at the IIT-K to stop students from reaching Nanaroa park, remained a mute spectator. When some professors got the news about the incident they rushed to the IIT-K gate and convinced students to come back to the Students Activity Centre (SAC).

Resentment prevailed among the IIT-K students against the police and the administration. Members of FIR, while lamenting police and administration act, called them puppets in the hands of the State government.

Earlier, the administration had converted the Nanarao Park into a fortress with anti-riots vehicle and heavy contingent of police deployed at the venue since early morning on Sunday. Similar was the scene at GSVM Medical College premises.

Omendra, a member of the FIR, deploring today’s police act said, “We didn’t know that police would come down to such banality as girl students were thrashed even as a couple of lady constables stood behind and watched the violence. Sadly, no senior official tried to stop the police.”

Meanwhile, ADM (city) Abrar Ahmed denied any such violent incident at IIT-K and while talking to HT he said, “I was not at the spot but to the best of my knowledge nothing happened there. Nevertheless we have, by restoring normalcy in the city, honored the verdict of honorary Supreme Court.”
