india Updated: Jul 02, 2010 18:10 IST

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be honoured with the degree of Doctor of Science by IIT-Kanpur when he visits the institute on Saturday.

The Prime Minister will be the Chief Guest at the 42th annual convocation of the institute and he will give away gold medals to meritorious students, Director Sanjay Dhande told reporters in Kanpur on Friday.

Former president APJ Abdul Kalam and former prime minister Morarji Desai are among the eminent personalities who received the degree earlier, he said.

"Around 1195 students will get degrees tomorrow. The prime minister will also inaugurate IIT's solar project and Ganga basin management plan," Dhande said.

Tight security arrangements have been made at the institute premises in view of the prime minister's visit. On March six, President Pratibha Patil had inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of the institute.
