With summer vacations round the corner and competition for tourists hotting up among the Indian states, the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) has taken the proverbial rabbit out of its hat. The Corporation is sponsoring an all-expenses paid week-long fete, Vismayam 2008, of 1,000 magicians, including 100 foreign participants. If you are thinking what these practioners of abracadabra will do to boost tourism, read further. The Leela Group of Hotel, national carrier Air India, actor Mohanlal, Tamil Nadu Tourism and even some CPI(M) ministers of Kerala have joined magic bandwagon. The fete will sport 42 malls selling magicware and other tricks of the trade.
The KTDC has always been in the forefront of innovation and this one too gets our vote. But what we found rather interesting was the proposed participation of some members of the ruling party. The illusionists of the political stage now seem to be eager to learn the tricks of the trade from the real masters.
The sad part, however, is that spectators will not get a chance to learn the tricks of the trade. But post-Vismayam, would ‘Sim Sala Bim’ become a household word? Doesn’t seem so but at least it is sure to give KTDC some very good mileage. Meanwhile, the other tourism boards will be left looking for their magic wand to come up with an equally smart move.
