Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Afzal Usmani, who escaped from a court in Mumbai last month, had stayed in Madhya Pradesh for some time before proceeding to Uttar Pradesh, where he was finally arrested.

Usmani is accused of arranging the vehicles that were used to plant bombs during the Ahmedabad serial blasts in 2008.

Usmani told Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officials that after escaping from Mumbai on September 20, he had boarded a train to reach Indore.

As per sources, after spending some time in the city, Usmani reached Bhopal. He was joined by his nephew Javed, who allegedly arranged fake identification documents. Thereafter, the duo went to Jabalpur, and finally entered UP.

Usmani was planning to sneak into Nepal. ATS sleuths got wind of his plans when he reached Bahraich (UP). He was caught near the Nepal border and taken back to Mumbai.

Now, the ATS officials will conduct an investigation to ascertain if Usmani had any links in the state.

Meanwhile, the police have no clue about the SIMI operatives who escaped from Khandwa jail four weeks ago.
