Immolation bid foiled

india Updated: Sep 11, 2006 01:16 IST

A WOMAN constable was arrested while attempting to immolate herself along with her four kids  in front of the Vidhan Bhawan on Sunday. A sub-inspector stopped her from setting herself ablaze.

Pushpa Gupta, who lives on the Gorakhpur Police Lines campus told newspersons after her arrest that she had come to Lucknow to commit self-immolation along with her kids to highlight her problems. She said that she had been demanding adequate maintenance allowance from her husband. She said her husband Amar Nath, presently posted as a constable in Banda had foxed her into marrying him in 1983.

“Initially everything went well. Then Amar Nath started harassing me. He used to threaten me quite often but I continued to live with him for the sake of kids. Then he stopped giving money to meet even the basic needs,” she claimed.

Pushpa said that she had complained to the higher-ups in the police department. However, when nothing was done she staged a sit-in outside the Gorakhpur DM’s office. “After this Amar Nath gave a written assurance before the district administration officials that he would pay her maintenance allowance. But, he once again went back on the promise,” she claimed. Finally the woman constable approached the State Women’s Commission. Here, too she was disappointed.

Finally, when she lost all hope, Pushpa said she decided to immolate herself along with her kids in the State Capital.

Pushpa also charged a sub inspector (SI), who stopped her from immolating herself with her kids, of harassing them.

“The cop was rude and he misbehaved with us,” Pushpa alleged. Some smalltime political workers who were present at the scene asked why the women cops were not present. They also entered into an altercation with the cops.
