A 23-year old girl from Manipur, working as a salesgirl at a shopping mall on MG Road, was allegedly molested in her sleep at her rented apartment in Gurgaon on Wednesday morning.

When she went to file a complaint, the police allegedly questioned her character and detained one of her two cousins with whom she was staying. They also allegedly asked her to prove if they were really her cousins.

"Her cousins recently arrived from Manipur in search of employment. On Tuesday night, one of them came late and forgot to bolt the door. Around 5am, one of their neighbours entered their room and attempted to molest the victim," Madhu Chandra, spokesperson of the NGO North East Support Centre & Helpline, claimed.

Chandra said when she shouted for help, the accused hid in the bathroom.

"When a police team visited the house, the accused managed to run away. But instead of helping her, they asked about her cousins and asked her to prove their identity," said Chandra.

The spokesperson claimed the police detained one of them for more than one hour. "I contacted the SHO after which he was set free," said Chandra. The police said the youth entered their room by mistake.

Later in the evening, Chandra said the victim was so traumatised that she decided to withdraw her complaint despite repeated assurances from the organisation. Maheshwar Dayal, DCP (Crime) Gurgaon, said: "We request the victims to come forward. They can also file a complaint against the policemen who allegedly discriminated against them. We will take action."

HT managed to talk to the accused over the phone and he said, “I had a stomach upset and I mistakenly entered their room.”
