Normal life was thrown out of gear following incessant rains in the district since the last 24 hours, resulting in a rise in major rivers in the area.

The rivers Ghaghra, Rapti, Kunhra and Kuano, which were earlier receding, recorded a rising trend on Wednesday, according to Central Water Commission report.

More than 174 mm of rains have been recorded in the district since Tuesday night, the CWC report said.

Ghaghra was flowing above the danger mark at Elgin Bridge and Ayodhya while Kuano was rising in Basti and Mukhlispur, but remained below the danger level, the report said.

Kunhra river at Uska Bazar in Mahrajganj and Rohin at Trimohani Ghat were also rising but remained below the danger mark.

Several low-lying areas of the city were water-logged and Independence day celebration was affected due to the heavy downpour.
