Incessant rains in Nashik swell water levels in dams

india Updated: Jul 24, 2009 13:32 IST

Water levels in Gangapur, Darna and other dams in the city and adjoining areas have risen owing to incessant rains in Nashik for the fifth day on Friday.

The irrigation department released water from both the dams yesterday resulting in flooding in tribal-dominated Igatpuri tehsil where water was flowing over a bridge at Kaluste village, disrupting vehicular traffic to 20 villages.

The district, comprising 15-tehsils has recorded 5444.30 mm rains till July 23, official sources said on Friday.

Darna and Gangapur dams, having a capacity of 7149 amd 5630 mcft each has breached the half level mark, they said.

However, farmers, who were eagerly awaiting for a good spell after fears of less than average rainfall were happy for their Kharif crops.
