Increase in infiltration across LoC: Army
Army on Thursday said attempts have been made from across the border to "keep the pot of terrorism boiling".
Admitting that there is a 'slight' increase in the level of infiltration through LoC in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the heightening of violence, Army on Thursday said attempts have been made from across the border to "keep the pot of terrorism boiling" in the state.
"There is a slight increase in the level of infiltration. There are attempts from across the border to keep the pot of terrorism boiling in Jammu and Kashmir," General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command Lt General Deepak Kapoor told reporters on the sidelines of Ladakh Ekta Utsav coinciding with the Vijay Dewas celebration here.
He said the infiltration has been increased in April, May and June as compared to the first few months of the year. "Compared to last year the level is not too high".
Asked about effects of border fencing, thermal imagers and ground censors, the GOC said these have proved very successful to stop infiltration and bring down the level of infiltration as compared to the previous year when there was no fencing and thermal imagers.
"As compared to 2001-2002 when there was no border fencing and thermal imagers, there is a huge decrease in the level of infiltration as compared to 2003, 2004 and 2005 after border fencing along LoC," Gen Kapoor said.
He said that the increased level of infiltration during the past few months have risen the level of violence in Kashmir valley where terrorists choose to hit soft targets like tourists and innocent people instead of bearing to take on target like armed forces.
Regarding demilitarisation of Siachen, he said everyone would like to have peace but as for Siachen it is something to safeguard which Indian troops gave their blood.
