State Forests Minister Himmat Kothari said today special attention was being paid to the quality of leaves and the collection rates for the areas under cooperative unions of north Sagar, Tikamagarh and Chhatarpur had now increased from Rs 300 to Rs 400 per standard bag to bring it at par with the rates in the remaining unions.

It was brought to the notice of the State Government that good quality leaves were collected from areas under Sagar, Tikamgarh and Chhatarpur district unions which was being sold in adjoining areas of Uttar Pradesh surreptitiously.

The State Government decided to increase the collection rate to check illegal transportation and sale of tendu leaves. The collectors who have already been paid at the rate of Rs 300 per standard bag will be given the difference amount.

The policy was continued in 2005 and 9.42 lakh standard bags of leaves were sold. In the year 2006 also advance tenders have been invited and 18.16 lakh standard bags of notified tendu leaves have been sold. That is likely to fetch Rs 149. 61 crore.

Khare said an income of Rs 19 lakh was likely from sale of tendu leaves collected in 2004 and Rs 25 crore from the leaves collected in 2005.

A sum of Rs 11.50 crore has already been paid as incentive to the pluckers for tendu leaves collection season of 2004.
