India will pull it off. In its own unique style.

This was the message from the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee to 200 delegates from 71 participating nations who are in Delhi to take stock of games preparedness.

The delegates went around the city on Thursday inspecting venues where the Games will be held next October.

Many were concerned by the tardy pace of work. And the most developed countries like Australia, Canada and Britain seemed the most apprehensive.

Chris Jenkins, a delegate from Wales, said: “It’s not only about completing the physical infrastructure on time. Once the venues are ready, they have to be operationalised. I don’t see that happening. By this time, the venues should have become operational.”

Delegates from Mauritius and Cameroon were more optimistic. “Our major concern is whether the buildings will meet their deadlines. But your country has the manpower and will to do it,” said Vivian Gungaram from Mauritius.

Later, committee secretary general Lalit Bhanot told a press briefing: “The delegates were impressed by the infrastructure and accommodation... There are still 360 days to go and everything will be ready.”
