India on Saturday launched a new initiative to promote ties with Nepal by sending batches of Nepali students to Indian universities.
The programme, Bharat Nepal Shiksha Maitra Karyakram, was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Nepal visit in August.
The first batch of students left for India on Saturday. They will be visiting Calcutta University, take part in educational events and interactions and also tour places of historical and cultural importance in the area.
As part of the programme Nepali undergraduate and post-graduate students will be sent to prestigious Indian universities in batches of about 20 each.
“This will allow the students to understand different facets of life in India and Indo-Nepal relations. This, in turn, will promote will promote closer ties and friendly relations between our nations,” said a release issued by the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.
