India loses to Italy in World Team Squash C'ship

India failed to reach the top 16 playoff after finishing third in their pool following their crucial qualifying tie defeat against Italy in the World Men's Team Squash Championship in Denmark.

India failed to reach the top 16 playoff after finishing third in their pool following their crucial qualifying tie defeat against Italy in the World Men's Team Squash Championship in Denmark.

India, seeded ninth, in the World Squash Federation event finished behind eighth seed Italy and 17th seeded Scotland, ahead of outsiders Venezuela in their pool matches at the Squash Center Denmark in the city of Odense.

India will now compete for 17-28 positions in the next phase of the tournament. As many as 28 nations are battling out in the qualifying event divided into seven groups which will finally produce a team order from 1-28.

Earlier, Indian challenge was ripped apart by tournament favourite Italy with top rung player Ritwik Bhattacharya losing his game in straight sets to David Bianchetti.

Bianchetti outclassed world number 65 Bhattacharya 13-11, 11-7, 11-8 in 35 minutes to sound the bell. Later, world number 205 Gaurav Nandrajog went down to Jose Facchini 11-7, 11-7, 11-5 in 32 minutes.

However, Harinder Pal Sandhu played outstanding squash, coming back from 0-7 in the first game and 6-9 in the second to beat Amr Swelim 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 in 42 minutes and bring some smiles in the Indian camp.
